Golf Finishes 23rd Out of 37 Teams at NEIGA Championship

B.J. Powers places 60th out of 182 golfers

RESULTS

CAPE COD, Mass. (October 19, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce University golf team shot a 38-over-par, 326, during the final round on Tuesday to finish the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship in 23rd place out of 37 teams. The Ravens also shot a 326 during the first round on Monday and finished with a two-round total of 652 (+76).

The highlight of the tournament for Franklin Pierce was once again junior co-captain B.J. Powers (Southbury, Conn.), who finished in 60th place out of 182 golfers as he shot a two-round total of 158 (+14). After shooting a nine-over-par, 81, in the first round, Powers responded on Tuesday in the final round with an impressive 77 (+5).

Powers concluded his fall in fine fashion with the solid showing at the NEIGA. During the 2010 fall schedule, Powers produced five top-10 finishes, including a win at the SNHU Penmen Invitational, and an 11th-place finish in another event.

Sophomore Ian Landry (Loudon, N.H.) shot a +12, 84, during the final round to finish in a tie for 111th with a two-round total of 165 (+21). Senior Justin Haapala (Danielson, Conn.) also finished in 111th as he followed a first-round 84 with a score of 81 during the final round on Tuesday.

Junior Matt Lennon (Bow, N.H.) tied for 117th in the tournament as he shot a final-round, 85 (+13), to follow his opening-round 81. In all, Lennon finished with a 22-over-par (166). Junior co-captain Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.) was the fifth Ravens' golfer to compete in the tournament and he finished 119th with a two-round total of 167 (+23), including a final-round 84 (+12).

The University of Rhode Island, a Division I member in the Atlantic 10 Conference, won the tournament with a score of 585 (+9), while the University of Connecticut (Big East school) followed in second with a 586 (+10).

Franklin Pierce concluded its fall portion of the 2010-11 schedule and will return to action with the spring schedule in early April.
