B.J. Powers Wins SNHU Invite Individual Title on 1st Playoff Hole; Golf Finishes Fourth

Powers has finished among the top-11 in the individual standings in five of six tournaments this fall

NORTH SUTTON, N.H. (October 11, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce University golf team celebrated an impressive accomplishment on Monday afternoon as junior co-captain B.J. Powers (Southbury, Conn.) won the individual title at the SNHU Penmen Invitational as he carded a birdie on the first playoff hole to pick up his first medalist honor this season. The Ravens, as a team, finished fourth overall with a two-round team score of 637 (+61) at the Country Club of New Hampshire in North Sutton.

Powers picked up the top individual award on after he birded the first playoff hole against Assumption's Ryan Myers. Both golfers finished the two-round tournament with identical scores of 153 (+9).

Despite shooting a final-round 80 (+8), Powers ended up going wire-to-wire to win the tournament as he entered the second round on Monday in first place with a two-shot lead. He turned in a spectacular first-round, one-over-par 73, on Sunday to grab hold of the top spot in the tournament.

For Powers, it was his fourth top-10 finish of the fall season. He has actually finished among the top-11 in the individual standings in five of the six tournaments he has competed in so far.

Franklin Pierce, as a squad, moved up one spot in the team standings during the final round as the Ravens entered Monday in fifth place. After carding a 36-over-par, 324, in Sunday's first round, Franklin Pierce lowered its score in Monday's round by shooting a 25-over-par, 313.

The Ravens finished just six strokes off the lead, as Assumption won the team title with a 55-over-par, 631. Manhattan, a Division I program, and UMass-Lowell finished in a tie for second with scores of 633 (+57). Franklin Pierce finished ahead of Northeast-10 programs such as Bentley, Saint Anselm, Southern New Hampshire and Saint Michael's.

A pair of Ravens finished tied for 15th in the final standings, including senior Justin Haapala (Danielson, Conn.) and sophomore Ian Landry (Loudon, N.H.). The two finished with a total score of 162 (+18), as Haapala shot a final-round 75 (+3) and Landry carded a second-round score of 78 (+6). Haapala moved up 17 spots in the final round as he entered the day in 32nd place. Landry moved up 11 spots as he stood in 26th place following the first round.

Junior co-captain Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.) shot a final-round 80 (+8) to finish in a tie for 20th place after he entered Monday sitting in a tie for 26th.

Junior Matt Lennon (Bow, N.H.) was the fifth Ravens' golfer to compete in the tournament and he turned in a respectable 23rd-place finish after shooting a final-round 82 (+10). In all, each of the five Ravens' golfers finished among the top-25 in the individual standings.

Franklin Pierce returns to the course on Wednesday afternoon when the Ravens play host to the FPU Fall Invitational at The Shattuck in Jaffrey, N.H. The tournament is slated to begin at 12 p.m. on a course which was tabbed the 43rd toughest course in America by Golf Digest and ESPN.com back in July.
