Golf Sits in Fifth; B.J. Powers in First Place Following First Day of SNHU Invitational
Powers continues to add to his impressive fall accomplishments by sitting in first place following first day of SNHU Invite
NORTH SUTTON, N.H. (October 10, 2010) -- The Franklin
Pierce University golf team used a strong performance from junior
co-captain B.J. Powers (Southbury, Conn.) on
Sunday to sit in fifth place following the first day of the SNHU
Penmen Invitational at the Country Club of New Hampshire in North
Sutton. The Ravens carded a 36-over-par, 324, during the day and
will enter the final round on Monday just eight shots off the lead,
held by both Assumption and Bentley (+28, 316).
Franklin Pierce's solid opening round was aided by the spectacular
first round turned in by Powers, who carded a one-over-par, 73, to
sit in first place following the first round. Powers, who has
finished among the top-10 in the individual standings in three
tournaments this fall, will enter the final round on Monday two
shots up on the field. Assumption's Rick Bylund and Bentley's
Nick Clarke carded three-over 75s on Sunday to sit in a two-way tie
for second place.
Three other Ravens sit among the top-30 in the individual standings
following the first day of competition, including Matt
Lennon (Bow, N.H.), who is tied for 22nd after shooting an
11-over-par, 83.
A pair of Ravens are tied for 26th after carding 84s (+12),
including junior co-captain Brian Fleckles (Sandwich,
Mass.) and sophomore Ian Landry (Loudon,
N.H.).
Justin Haapala (Danielson, Conn.) was the fifth
Ravens golfer to compete on the afternoon and he is in 32nd place
following the first round after shooting an 87 (+15).
The final round of the SNHU Penmen Invitational will begin on
Monday morning at 9 a.m. Following tomorrow's round, Franklin
Pierce will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when the Ravens
play host to the FPU Fall Invitational at The Shattuck in Jaffrey,
N.H. The tournament will begin at 12 p.m.
