Golf Opens Season With Fifth-Place Finish At Assumption College Shootout

SUTTON, Mass. (September 8,
2009) – Senior Brandon Weiner (Marlboro,
N.J.) shot a 78 on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Franklin
Pierce University golf team to a team score of 329 and a
fifth-place finish out of seven teams at the Assumption College
Shootout at Blackstone National Golf Course. Adelphi junior Matt
Demeo and sophomore Stuart Pelkinen tied for medalist honors as
each carded a 72 to lead Adelphi to the tournament title with a
team score of 294.
Behind Weiner for Franklin Pierce, sophomore Brian
Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.) carded a 79, junior
Derek Flodin (Wilmington, Mass.) posted an 84,
senior Peter Panopoulos (Rindge, N.H.) shot an 88
and junior Justin Haapala (Danielson, Conn.)
recorded an 89.
After Adelphi, Le Moyne and American finished 12 shots back and
tied for second as each posted a 306, followed by Assumption in
fourth with a 324. Franklin Pierce was five shots further back in
fifth and finished four shots in front of Saint Rose, which shot a
333. Anna Maria carded a team score of 350 to finish seventh.
Individually after Demeo and Pelkinen, American International
sophomore Kevin Daniels placed third with a 74, while five
different players tied for fifth with 75s.
The Ravens return to the course on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they
travel to the Blazers Invitational, which is set for an 11 a.m.
start at Chicopee Country Club in Chicopee, Mass.
