Fleckles Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

Sandwich, Mass., native collects honor for first time after leading Ravens to team title at Blazers Invitational with medalist round

RINDGE, N.H. (April 28, 2009) - Franklin Pierce University's Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) has been named the Northeast-10 Freshman of the Week for men's golf it was announced by the Conference office this morning.

Fleckles, who earns the award for the first time, posted a 78.67 stroke average over three rounds of competition in two events for Franklin Pierce last week. He earned medalist honors at the Blazers Invitational, hosted by Elms College, leading the Ravens to the team title with a three-over-par round of 74 - matching his season low round. Fleckles led the field with three birdies on the 6,742-yard, par 71, layout at Chicopee (Mass.) Country Club to go with ten pars, shooting 36 on the front nine and 38 on the back, to become the first Franklin Pierce golfer to win the individual title at an event since Paul Izzi earned medalist honors at the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational on October 14, 2002.

Fleckles placed 16th overall at the AIC/NE-10 Invitational, hosted by American International College, with a two-day score of 162 on Monday and Tuesday. After carding an opening round 84 at the 6,531-yard, par 72 layout at Springfield Country Club, he moved up eight spots in the individual standings with a day two score of 78.

Fleckles leads Franklin Pierce with a stroke average of 80.57 over 14 rounds of competition in his first collegiate season, having played in ten of 11 events - breaking 80 six times, including four of five rounds so far this spring. His average is the lowest for a Ravens golfer since Mike Smith posted an 80.33 average in 2002. Fleckles has posted a 78.20 stroke average over five rounds in four events so far during the Ravens spring season. He set his season low by carding a two-over-par 74 at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club, in Boylston, Mass., to place second overall in his collegiate debut at the Assumption College Shootout on September 16.

Franklin Pierce concludes the 2008-2009 season tomorrow when it hosts the Franklin Pierce Spring Invitational at The Shattuck in Jaffrey beginning at noon. The event will mark the final in charge by head coach Owen Houghton who is retiring after 22 years at the helm.
