Franklin Pierce 27th After Day One at NEIGA Championship

Balchunas tied for 53rd overall after day one 78

CAPE COD, Mass. (October 23, 2006) - Franklin Pierce stands in 27th place among 43 teams after day one at the 72nd New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship on the par 72 The Captains Country Club this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce posted a day one score of 329 and is seventh among the 11 NCAA Division II schools at the event. The University of Rhode Island leads overall after posting a two-under-par team score of 286 - 12-strokes better than the University of Connecticut for second place (298). URI has two players atop the individual leaderboard, led by Jesse Larson with a four-under-par round of 68, while Ben Spitz carded a three-under-par 69.

Sophomore Steve Balchunas (Brockton, Mass./Coyle-Cassidy) carded a 78 to lead Franklin Pierce, good for a tie for 53rd overall. Junior Craig Jasinski (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) posted a round of 82 (T-108th), while freshman Peter Panopoulos (Rindge, N.H./Conant) notched an 83 (T-122).

The NEIGA Championship concludes with second-day action tomorrow.
