Franklin Pierce 18th at Penmen Fall Classic

Smith falters after opening round 73

CANTERBURY, N.H.  (October 6, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce men's golf team placed 18th over the weekend at the 2003 Penmen Fall Classic, hosted by Southern New Hampshire University, at Canterbury Woods Country Club.

Bryant College took top team honors with a 583 team score, 28 strokes ahead of second-place Saint Thomas Aquinas College (611), at the two-day event.

Franklin Pierce, which fired a 702 (349-353) team score, was led by senior Mike Smith (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) who posted a two-day score of 162 to place 26th overall. Smith faltered on Sunday with an 89 after posting a one-over-par 73 on Saturday to put him three shots off the lead.

Senior Alex Hodgman (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) placed 47th overall with a two-day total of 170 (87-83).

Bryant sophomore Jim O'Connell (Troy, N.Y.) earned medallist honors with a combined two-under-par 142 (71-71).

Franklin Pierce returns to the links on Thursday at the Western New England College Invitational in Springfield, Mass.
