Smith Named NE-10 Golf Co-Athlete of the Week

Hanover, Mass., native shines in his first collegiate golf season

RINDGE, N.H. (October 8, 2002) - Franklin Pierce juniorMike Smith (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Co-Athlete of the Week for men's golf this afternoon.

Smith is the first golfer in program history to earn the award after he earned medallist honors at the Saint Anselm Autumn Invitational last week. He outpaced the field by three strokes as he carded a one-over-par 72 at the 6,307-yard, par-71, Candia Woods Golf Links, in Candia, N.H.

Smith spearheaded a Ravens team that saw two other Ravens post scores in the 70's as the team registered a program record one-day score of 311 to place third in the six-team field (first among three Division II schools) behind Endicott College and University of New Hampshire. Franklin Pierce broke the program's previous one-day low total of 313 set at the same event (different course) three years ago.

Smith leads the Ravens this fall with a 78.83 stroke average through the first four events (six rounds) of his collegiate career. A member of the Franklin Pierce ice hockey team which begins its inaugural varsity season this winter, Smith has posted three sub-80 rounds and two-straight under 75 after he carded a 74 on the second day of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on September 22.

The Ravens return to the links on Thursday for the Western New England College Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
