Men’s Basketball Can’t Solve New Haven, Downed 67-51

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (January 20, 2016) – Sophomore Asante Sandiford (Boston, Mass.) fell one rebound short of a double-double, pumping in 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds. However, the Franklin Pierce Ravens Men's Basketball could not find their way to a win against the University of New Haven Chargers, as the Ravens fell 67-51 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, the Ravens fall back to .500 at 8-8 overall (5-6 Northeast-10) and have now lost three of their last four games. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-11 overall (3-8 overall).

After both teams traded two buckets apiece to begin the action, New Haven took off for an 8-0 run to take an early 12-4 lead with 15:44 to play in the first half. That catapulted the Chargers to a major lead in the first half, eventually jumping to a 19 point lead with 2:16 to play in the first half, 36-17.

The second half didn't bring as much luck for Franklin Pierce, as New Haven would put their lead to 21 at 17:23 to play, with the score standing at 40-19. However, over the next three minutes the Ravens would cut the lead down to 14 points after Sandiford put in a layup. Then with 11:52 to play, sophomore Dustin Cole (Standish, Maine) nailed a three-pointer to bring the lead down to 12 at 47-35.

Sandiford would do more work down the stretch, as he was a main catalyst to bringing the lead to 10 points with 9:55 to play, as he hit yet another layup. After another New Haven basket, it would be Cole again with another three to bring the lead to nine.

Looking as another comeback was in reach as it has been often this season, nine points would be as close at the Ravens would get, as the Chargers turned around and popped off another 8-0 from the 9:10 mark to 6:34 to play, giving them a 59-42 lead.

As time wound down, New Haven would progressively build a lead to the final buzzer, as the game would end at 67-51 in favor of the Chargers.

Along with Sandiford's strong effort came a nice performance from junior Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) who collected 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) added eight points on the night as well.

For New Haven, Jemal Mosley led the way with a stellar 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field while Samir McDaniels added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Levy Gillespie also pumped in 17 points as well, which was second most from all scorers on the night.

The Ravens return to the hardwood this Saturday, January 23 when they return home to Rindge to take on Southern Connecticut State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
