Baseball: Ravens Drop Double Header Against University of New Haven

RINDGE, N.H. (4/13/2024)—The Franklin Pierce baseball team's seven-game winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon at Pappas Field as they were swept by the Chargers of New Haven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In Game 1 of the doubleheader, New Haven scored two runs in the top of the first and added a run in the second inning. In the bottom of the second, sophomore transfer Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, MA) hit a solo home run for his fifth home run of the season to cut the Chargers lead to two. In the top of the fourth, Chargers sophomore outfielder Nick Ungania had an RBI double, scoring senior infielder Kenneth Franquiz to make it 4-1. Then, sophomore infielder Matt McIntire had a two-run home run to give New Haven a 6-1 lead. Sophomore outfielder Shaun Callahan made it 7-1 New Haven when he doubled to left field, scoring graduate infielder Tyler Wells. In the bottom of the fourth DeAndrade hit his second home run of the game to make it 7-2. Next, senior left fielder Hunter Wilichoski (Hamilton, MA) hit a solo home run to cut the Chargers lead to four. 

• In the top of the sixth, McIntire had a two-run home run for his second homer of the game to give the Chargers a 9-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, DeAndrade hit his third home run of the afternoon to make it 9-4. In the top of seventh, freshman infielder Joseph Frazzeta had a two-run home run to make it 11-4 New Haven.

• In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore outfielder Joey Acker (Upton, MA) had a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring graduate outfielder Eli Battipaglia (Cheshire, CT) to cut the Chargers lead to six. Later on, Wilichoski had a two-RBI single, scoring junior transfer infielder Kiobel Lugo (Boston, MA) and graduate infielder Ian Battipaglia (Cheshire, CT) to cut the Chargers lead to four. In the final two innings, New Haven pulled away, scoring four runs. It was highlighted by a three-run home run by Wells. New Haven beat Franklin Pierce 15-7 to take game one of the doubleheader. 

• In Game 2, Wells and McIntire hit solo home runs to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, New Haven scored three more runs to make it 5-0. It was highlighted by sophomore catcher Casey Cerruto hitting a solo home run for his first homer of the season. New Haven had a comfortable 9-0 lead over Franklin Pierce after the top of the sixth. 

• In the bottom of the sixth, Franklin Pierce scored four runs to cut the Chargers lead to five. Senior infielder Connor Smalley (West Sayville, NY) had an RBI single, scoring Acker. Next, Ian Battipaglia had a 2 RBI double, scoring Smalley and Wilichoski. Then, red-shirt junior Hunter Paquette (North Walpole, NH) had an RBI single, scoring Ian Battipaglia

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS

• In Game 1 of the doubleheader, senior pitcher Kyle Roche (Braintree, MA) picked up his third loss of the season. He pitched six innings and gave up nine hits, eight runs, three walks, two home runs, and struck out seven batters. Freshman pitcher Steven Parent (Sturbridge, MA) pitched in relief for the first time in his collegiate career. He pitched 0.1 innings and gave up one hit, two runs, one walk, one home run, and struck out no batter. Freshman pitcher Nevin Belanger (Wilton, CT) pitched 2.2 innings and gave up three hits, four runs, one walk, one home run, and struck out three batters. 

• New Haven outhit Franklin Pierce 13-12. The Ravens had five errors. 

Ian Battipaglia went 3 for 5 and scored a run. DeAndrade went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and scored three runs. Wilichoski went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and scored a run. Lugo went 2 for 4 and scored a run. 

• In Game 2, sophomore pitcher Drew DeLucia (Medway, MA) picked up his second loss of the season. He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up five hits, three runs, two walks, three home runs, and struck out no batters. Senior pitcher Tyler McDonald (Haverhill, MA) pitched 2.1 innings and gave up three hits, two runs, four walks, and struck out two batters. Redshirt sophomore Sean Yoest (Foxborough, MA) came in relief to replace McDonald. He pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit, two runs, three walks, and struck out no batters. Freshman pitcher Michael Bokis (North Brookfield, MA) finished the game and pitched 1.1 innings. He gave up one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck out one batter. 

• Both teams had ten hits. The Ravens had one error. 

• Wilichoski went 2 for 3 and scored a run. In this afternoon's doubleheader, New Haven hit seven home runs. 

NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens remain at home as they have a doubleheader matchup Sunday, April 14, against Southern Connecticut State University. Game one is at 1:30 p.m., followed by game two at 3:30 p.m.
