Baseball: Ravens Sunk by St. Thomas Spartans in Saturday's Double Header

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C (2/24/2024) -- The Franklin Pierce baseball team dropped to 1-3 on the season after losing both games Saturday afternoon to St. Thomas Aquinas College at Griffith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Spartans scored four runs in the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas College added three more runs in the top of the fourth to make it 7-0.

• The Spartans scored three more runs in the top of the eighth to make it 10-0. Franklin Pierce scored their only two runs in the bottom of the eighth. St. Thomas Aquinas College secured the 11-2 win over Franklin Pierce to capture their first win of the season.

• In Game 2, Franklin Pierce got on the board first in the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Joey Acker (Upton, MA) had an RBI triple, scoring sophomore transfer first baseman Nolan DeAndrade (Bridgewater, MA). The Ravens hit home runs in the top of the third and fourth innings. Graduate shortstop Ian Battipaglia (Cheshire, CT) hit a solo home run for his first home run of the season to make it 2-0. Graduate transfer catcher Christopher Roberti (New Fairfield, CT) hit a solo home run to pick up his second home run of the season to give Franklin Pierce a 3-0 lead.

• In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans tied the game at three when redshirt junior infielder Joseph Scamardella had a three RBI triple. In the top of the fifth, Franklin Pierce regained the lead 4-3 when freshman outfielder Shane Starr (Moretown, VT) had an RBI sacrifice fly to second base, scoring junior transfer infielder Kiobel Lugo (Boston, MA).

• In the bottom of the sixth, St. Thomas Aquinas College took the lead for the first time in the game. Scamardella had a three-run home run to make it 6-4 Spartans. STAC held on to sweep Franklin Pierce.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

• Franklin Pierce outhit St. Thomas Aquinas College 15-14 in the doubleheader. The Ravens committed two errors.

• DeAndrade had three hits and scored two runs.

• In Game 2, sophomore pitcher Kyle Salvati (Mount Sinai, NY) made his first career start on the mound. He pitched 3.1 innings, gave up four hits, three runs, three walks, and struck out five batters. Junior pitcher Esteban Rivera III (Hamden, CT) came in relief and picked up his first loss of the season. He gave up three hits, two runs, one walk, and struck out three batters. Senior pitcher Sean Foody (Tappan, NY) closed out the game and pitched the final inning. He gave up one hit, one run, one home run, and struck out two batters.

NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens conclude their road trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, tomorrow, Sunday, February 25, when they face off against Felician University. First pitch is at noon.
