Kevin Pettine pitches four-hit shutout to earn the win for SCSU

RINDGE, N.H. (May 19, 2011) – The fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University baseball team picked up a 2-1 win over third-seeded Wilmington University on Thursday night on day one of the 2011 NCAA Division II Baseball East Regional at Pappas Field in Rindge. SCSU improved to 39-6-1, while Wilmington fell to 37-11.

Southern Connecticut State advanced to the winner’s bracket on Friday and will take on second-seeded Franklin Pierce at 7 p.m. Wilmington will take on top-seeded Adelphi at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The game featured a pair of impressive pitching performances from the starters, including Southern’s Kevin Pettine, who went 8.0 innings and scattered four hits, while striking out three. He earned the win to improve to 9-0 on the season. Wilmington’s Joe Harris also went 8.0 innings despite suffering the loss to fall to 8-3. He gave up both runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and only three walks.

SCSU scored both of its runs in the eighth inning. Kyle Rosadino drove in the first run on a single, scoring Matt Pessy on the play. A.J. Rouleau plated his team’s second run with an RBI sacrifice fly later in the frame. Wilmington tried to claw back in the ninth and did score a run following Bryan Woolford’s RBI single to right field. However, Mike Johnston slammed the door shut on Wilmington the rest of the way to nail down his 13th save of the season.
