Wildcats upset top-seeded Chargers for fourth-straight win

RINDGE, N.H. (May 14, 2009) - Sixth-seeded Wilmington University opened the 2009 NCAA Division II East Regional, hosted by Franklin Pierce University, with a 10-1 upset of top-seeded Dominican College at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Wilmington (28-27) will the play the loser of today's third game between third-seeded Adelphi University (31-14) and fourth-seeded Dowling College (30-15) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Dominican (37-13) will face the loser of today's second game between second-seeded and host Franklin Pierce (37-16) and fifth-seeded Assumption College (32-19-1) tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Sophomore Matt Botting (Newark, Del./Newark) led Wilmington on offense as he hit 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Jordan Oncay (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior Cody Holliday (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) batted 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, three stolen bases and a run scored.

Freshman Mike Godwin (Hockessin, Del./A.I. DuPont) picked up the win (5-1)on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing just an earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks over seven innings.

Sophomores Dan Robinson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Mario Lopez (Anthony, N.M./Gadsden) each hit 2-for-3 to lead Dominican. Junior Willie Mann (Patterson, N.J./Brewster) finished 1-for-2 for the Chargers.

Sophomore Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) suffered the loss (6-2) for Dominican, surrendering six runs, five earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks over eight innings.

Wilmington jumped on the board with two runs in the second. Godwin led off with a double to center and scored when Oncay followed with a triple down the leftfield line. Oncay came home on a wild pitch. Dominican got a run back in the home half as sophomore Michael Munoz (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman) led off with an infield single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown).

Wilmington added three in the fourth with a two-run home run to right by Botting, followed two batters later by a solo shot to left center from junior JT Gregory (Woodbridge, Va./Garfield). The Wildcats broke the game open with a five-run ninth, sparked by RBI singles from Oncay and Botting.
