Nixon tosses seven-hit shutout to put Panthers in driver's seat

RINDGE, N.H. (May 15, 2009) - Third-seeded Adelphi University posted a 2-0 victory over fifth-seeded Assumption College in game six of the 2009 NCAA Division II Baseball East Regional, hosted by Franklin Pierce University, at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field tonight.

Adelphi (33-14) is in the driver's seat in the regional and will await the winner of tomorrow's first elimination game between fifth-seeded Assumption (33-20-1) and sixth-seeded Wilmington College (28-28) tomorrow night at 10 p.m. Assumption and Wilmington open Saturday's schedule at 3 p.m. The Wildcats dropped a 3-2 decision to fifth-seeded Dowling College (31-16) earlier today. Dowling and top-seeded Dominican College (38-13) will play an elimination game tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The Chargers eliminated second-seeded and host Franklin Pierce (37-18) this afternoon.

Sophomore Robert Nixon (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame College School) scattered seven hits in the shutout effort on the mound for Adelphi, striking out 13 and walking none. He allowed just four hits over the first seven innings en route to his seventh win (7-4) of the year.

Junior Anthony Anzalone (Smithtown, N.Y./York College) paced the Panthers offense, hitting 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Junior Justin Ciamillo (Sayville, N.Y./Suffolk CC) was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, while classmate Chris Weidlein (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) was 2-for-3 for Assumption. Classmate Michael Colebrook (Leicester, Mass./Saint John's) took the loss (4-4), allowing two earned runs on just four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk over 6.2 innings. He was perfect through his first three innings before allowing a one out single in the fourth.

Adelphi scored the lone runs of the contest in the fifth. Weidlein led off with a single up the middle, followed by a double to left center by Anzalone. Weidlein scored on a ground out to second by Ciamillo, before Anzalone came home on a suicide squeeze bunt by senior Mike Colonna (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic).
