Women's Tennis Opens New Season With Clean Sweep Over Colby-Sawyer, 9-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. (9/7/22) – Six members of the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team battled for a clean sweep through both singles and doubles, helping the Ravens cruise past host Colby-Sawyer College, 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Courts.

The victory marks the beginning of the 2022 fall season for Pierce, with Colby-Sawyer sliding to 0-2 to begin their respective campaign following the loss.

The combined efforts of graduates Ana Platisa (Belgrade, Serbia) and Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) opened the scoring for the Ravens with a dominant 8-3 victory at first doubles, with a closely contested 8-6 triumph from juniors Maria Penalver (Las Palmas, Spain) and Aynara Ferraz (Canary Islands, Spain) on the second court. Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) and Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.) delivered the closing arguments for the Ravens, finishing doubles competition off with a dominant 8-2 win at No. 3.

A similar all-around effort in singles competition boosted the Ravens in their efforts of holding Colby-Sawyer off the scoreboard. It was a clear path through and through as each matchup was decided in two sets, including sweeping victories of four or more points by Loria (6-1, 6-1 No.2), Ferraz (6-0, 6-1 No. 4), Asterio Correa (6-2, 6-1 No. 5) and Pagliuca (6-2, 6-0 No.6). At first and third singles, the deciding second set each went to a tiebreak, with Maria Penalver Aguilo and Ana Platisa both emerging as the winners, 7-5 to clinch the afternoon.

Women's Tennis remains on the road for their next matchup, where they will begin in-conference competition versus Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, September 13th with first serve at 4:00 PM.
