No. 67 Women’s Tennis Bounced by No. 1 Barry, 4-0, in NCAA Championship Third Round

Himani Mor and Liria Loria

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (May 17, 2022) -- For the second straight year, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team saw its run in the national tournament come to an end with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 1 nationally-ranked Barry. This time around, the No. 67 Ravens fell to the Buccaneers in the third round of the NCAA Championship, hosted by Rollins, at Sanlando Park.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce sees its season come to a close at 15-6, following a second straight trip to the NCAA National Finals. With the victory, Barry improves to 25-0 and has now won 60 straight matches, dating to a 4-2 loss to Nova Southeastern in the semifinal of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The Buccaneers are the four-time defending national champion.

Doubles play began the day and included an intriguing match at first doubles. The Franklin Pierce duo of junior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) and graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) -- who are ranked 37th in the country -- held their own against the No. 3 nationally-ranked Barry pair of juniors Deniz Khazan and Madeline Bosnjak. Khazan and Bosnjak recorded an early break, but Loria and Mor eventually broke back to level the match at 3-3. The contest would be left without a conclusion though, as the other two doubles matches were completed and the Buccaneers clinched the doubles point.

It was smooth sailing for Barry at second and third doubles. Third doubles wrapped up first, as the No. 4 pair of seniors Daniela Farfan and Kim Moosbacher swept away sophomores Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Canada) and Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain), 6-0. Second doubles followed shortly thereafter, with a 6-1 victory for senior Jil Engelmann and junior Helene Scholsen over graduate students Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) and Anais Geslin (Livry-Gargin, France).

Singles went quickly as well, as Barry posted a trio of 6-0, 6-0 victories to wrap up the match. Sixth singles closed out first, as Farfan went past Correa. Second singles followed, as Khazan -- the nation's top-ranked singles player -- blanked Aguilo. Third singles closed out shortly thereafter, as No. 26 Engelmann finished off Mor to clinch the 4-0 victory for the Buccaneers.
