RINDGE, N.H. (September 24, 2022) -- A chilly Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field saw the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team eke out a 1-0 win against visiting Southern Connecticut State University. The Ravens and Owls battled to the end of the Northeast-10 Conference contest, but a first-half penalty kick from sophomore Jasmine Perez-Acosta (Cape Coral, Fla.) stood as the game's only goal.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 6-1-1 (3-1-0 NE10). Southern Connecticut State suffers its first conference loss of the season and falls to 4-3-2 (2-1-2 NE10).
The Owls and Ravens went back and forth from the opening kickoff to create scoring chances, with Franklin Pierce holding a 4-2 edge in shots in the first half. Perez-Acosta would open the scoring in the 26th minute for the Ravens, as she scored on a penalty kick to make it 1-0, after freshman Shannon Burns (Medfield, Mass.) was hauled down in the penalty area. For Perez-Acosta, it was her fourth goal of the season and put her on a three-game goal-scoring streak.
In the second half, the Ravens continued to create scoring opportunities and prevented the Owls from getting anything going on offense. Franklin Pierce held a 5-3 edge in shot attempts in the second half, to post a 9-5 margin for the game. The best chance for the Ravens to find an insurance tally came in the 67th minute, after freshman Claudia Peirce (Carver, Mass.) was dropped in the box to earn the team's second penalty of the game. This time though, Perez-Acosta's shot went towards the middle of the net and SCSU graduate student goalkeeper Abby Allen was able to keep it out. The missed penalty would not prove costly, as Franklin Pierce pulled out the 1-0 victory for its third straight win.
Sophomore Gabby Calidonio (Flagler Beach, Fla.) started in goal for the Ravens, where she made one save and picked up the win (4-0-0). Fellow sophomore Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) played the second half and did not face a shot on her net. Allen (4-3-2) made five saves in the loss for SCSU.
Franklin Pierce will head to Syracuse, N.Y., on Tuesday, Sept. 27, as they take on Le Moyne College in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
