No. 3 Men’s Soccer Strikes Late, Doubles up Saint Rose, 2-1

Ravens men's soccer

RINDGE, N.H. (September 17, 2022) -- Graduate student Miguel Angel Pastor Gutierrez (Valencia, Spain) got his head to a cross in the 89th minute on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 3 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie with just 78 seconds left in regulation. The late goal came off an assist by senior Rodrigo Parafita (Cerceda, Spain) and lifted the Ravens to a 2-1 win over visiting Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field.

With the win, Franklin Pierce remains unblemished at 8-0-0 (3-0-0 NE10), while Saint Rose falls to 4-2-1 (1-1-1 NE10).

Franklin Pierce dominated possession and statistics throughout the 90 minutes. With Saint Rose playing in a defensive shell aside from the six minutes it trailed, the Ravens were able to pile up advantages of 26-7 in shot attempts, 9-3 in shots on goal and 7-1 in corner kicks.

The game went scoreless into its final quarter-hour, before Franklin Pierce finally broke the seal in the 80th minute. Graduate student Jonas Cervera Anchel (Chiva, Spain) made a long run with possession up the right side of the field, before cutting towards the middle, along the top of the penalty area. From the right channel, he drove the ball towards goal, with a shot which really should have been handled by Saint Rose junior goalkeeper Tomas Rozman. Rozman got both hands to the shot, but the ball got behind him anyway, for Anchel's second goal of the season.

Saint Rose came out of its shell now that it trailed, and was able to come up with an equalizer in the aftermath of a set piece in the 86th minute. The free kick was sent into the blender from 30 yards out on the right side, and the ball eventually ping-ponged out on the left side for senior Nick Koenig. Koenig got his leg into one from 25 yards out and blasted it off the crossbar above Franklin Pierce senior goalkeeper Kosta Maniatis (Montreal, Quebec). The rebound came straight in front of the goal, and freshman Nils Annborn was waiting for it. Annborn sent a half-volley right back where it came from and tallied his first career goal to level the score with 4:05 to play.

It all set the stage for Parafita and Gutierrez to hook up on the winning goal in the final two minutes. Parafita made his way deep into the left-wing corner with the ball, and then hit a cross towards the far side. The ball returned to the field at the top of the six-yard box, in front of the right post, and arrived there at the same time as Gutierrez's head. The Spaniard's noggin sent the ball to the back of the net for his second of the year, which sent the Ravens into celebration mode.

Maniatis (7-0-0) made two saves against three shots to pick up the win in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Rozman (3-1-0) was considerably busier and made seven saves against two shots in the losing effort for Saint Rose.

The Ravens are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Le Moyne for an NE10 match at 4 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
