RINDGE, N.H. (November 17, 2022) -- Second seeded and No. 6 nationally-ranked Charleston (W.Va.) scored once in each half at Sodexo Field on Thursday afternoon, to post a 2-0 victory over sixth seeded and No. 24 Post, in the third round of NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Super Region 1 play, hosted by Franklin Pierce University. Junior Lewis Redding struck in the first half, while graduate student Connor Hartwell added the insurance marker in the second half for the Golden Eagles.

With the win, Charleston (20-1-0) advances to Saturday’s national quarterfinal, set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field, against the winner of Thursday’s second third-round game, which features top seed and No. 1 Franklin Pierce against fifth seed and No. 12 Davis & Elkins.

With the loss, Post (16-4-2) sees its season, and sixth all-time NCAA Championship appearance, come to an end.

The only goal of the first half came in the 42nd minute, after freshman Joao Belmudes made a run on the left wing to get on the other end of a pass into the penalty area. From there, he slipped a centering pass to the top of the six-yard box for junior Lewis Redding, who one-touched his fifth of the year into the back of the net.

The Golden Eagles tacked on some insurance in the 73rd minute, when graduate student Sam Bethell corralled a failed clear in the midfield. He served it back into the box and found graduate student Connor Hartwell at the penalty spot, and the latter deftly volleyed home his first of the season from there.

Junior Marc Torrado (18-1-0) stopped all three shots on his goal to post his 11th shutout of the season for Charleston. Sophomore Soren Jensen (11-1-2) stopped five of seven shots at the other end of the field for Post.
