RINDGE, N.H. (August 18, 2017) – On Sunday afternoon, right-hander Kevin McGowan became the second former member of the Franklin Pierce University baseball team to earn a call-up to Major League Baseball.

McGowan, who had been pitching for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s, joined the New York Mets in Philadelphia on Sunday, in the late innings of a win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Twice during the week, the Mets got McGowan warmed up in the bullpen: on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, and again on Wednesday night at home at Citi Field. However, both games concluded without the former Raven making an appearance.

McGowan's Major League debut will have to wait until his second call-up to the big leagues, as he became the victim of a numbers game on Thursday afternoon. Immediately prior to Wednesday night's game against the Yankees, the Mets had a pair of infielders suffer injuries, which left the team shorthanded. When the front office shuffled the 25-man active roster to accommodate those injuries before Thursday night's game, McGowan was the odd man out, and was optioned back to Triple-A Las Vegas.

McGowan remains on the Mets' 40-man roster. As a result, if not recalled sooner, he will return to the team after the Minor League season ends in September, when Major League active rosters expand. When he does eventually make his MLB debut, McGowan will join left-hander Steve Hathaway (Baseball-Reference) of the Arizona Diamondbacks as the only former Franklin Pierce players with Major League experience.

McGowan, who pitched for the Ravens from 2011-13, had his brightest moments in crimson and grey in the 2013 NCAA Championship East Regional. Facing elimination on Saturday morning, McGowan took the ball and fired a 120-pitch, nine-hit complete game, allowing one run and striking out four while defeating Pace to keep the season alive. Just 26 hours later, he returned to the mound and barreled through two shutout innings with two strikeouts against Wilmington (Del.), setting the tone in the East Regional title game, which the Ravens would ultimately win, 5-1.

McGowan was selected by the Mets in the 13th round (386 overall) of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
