RINDGE, N.H. (April 5, 2018) – Senior right-hander John Amendola (Wallingford, Conn.) fired eight scoreless innings of one-hit ball on just 74 pitches to take care of business for the Franklin Pierce University baseball team on Thursday afternoon. The offense supplied Amendola with 12 runs on 14 hits, as the Ravens rolled to a 12-0 win over visiting Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 17-8-1 (7-2 NE10, 4-1 NE Div.), while Saint Anselm falls to 7-13 (1-6 NE10, 1-4 NE Div.). The game was originally scheduled to be played at Saint Anselm, but was relocated to Rindge due to unplayable field conditions. In return, the game between the two on April 17, which was originally scheduled at Franklin Pierce, will now be played at Saint Anselm.

Amendola (3-1) was the story of the afternoon, as he breezed through his outing against the Hawks. He faced just one over the minimum over his eight innings of scoreless work, allowed one hit, did not issue a walk and struck out six. The one hit he did allow was later erased by a double play, and the only other baserunner against him reached on a sixth-inning error. Of Amendola's 74 pitches, 59 went for strikes. He retired the first nine batters and, later, the final eight batters he faced.

The Ravens got Amendola the only runs he would need with a pair in the bottom of the third. Sophomore center fielder Jack Duffy (Stratford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch leading off, moved around to third on a single down the left-field line by sophomore shortstop James Boria (Massapequa, N.Y.) and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by junior left fielder Brad Roberto (San Diego, Calif.). Later, with two outs, Boria scored from first when graduate student first baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass.) slugged an RBI triple deep into the gap in left-center.

Franklin Pierce made it 5-0 with three more in the bottom of the fourth, all of them unearned. Senior right fielder Adam Chase (Bridgewater, Mass.) led off with a single inside the left-field line, moved to second on a groundout and went to third while Duffy reached on a two-out error. After Duffy stole second, Boria cashed in Chase with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Boria then stole second, and Roberto cleaned up both baserunners by pulling a line drive over the first baseman's head and down the right-field line for a two-run double.

Three more in the fifth broke the game open and made it 8-0. Coggeshall and senior catcher Stephen Octave (New Windsor, N.Y.) took back-to-back walks to open the inning, before Chase singled through the left side to load the bases. Sophomore second baseman J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass.) chased home Coggeshall with an RBI single through the left side and, two batters later, Duffy doubled down the left-field line to plate Octave and Chase.

The Ravens tacked on three more in the sixth and one in the seventh to create the 12-0 final. Senior designated hitter Zack Tower (Auburn, Mass.) did the damage in the sixth, with a three-run home run of an estimated 385 feet into the gap in left-center, his fifth of the season. In the seventh, Coggeshall capped the scoring with an RBI single to center.

Saint Anselm threw seven pitchers on the afternoon, none of who were particularly effective. Senior right-hander Adam Krol (1-2) started and threw 81 pitches (52 strikes) over just four-plus innings of work. He was tagged for seven runs (four earned) on seven hits, walked two, hit a batter and struck out five while taking the loss.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, April 7, when they remain home to host American International in an NE10 doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at Pappas Field.
