RINDGE, N.H. (March 24, 2018) – With the Franklin Pierce University baseball team very much in need of a win in the back end of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, junior left-hander Evan Glew (North Andover, Mass.) took matters into his own hands at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field. The southpaw piled up 13 strikeouts, against just one walk, over seven innings of two-hit, scoreless ball to help guide the Ravens to an 8-3 win over visiting Adelphi. The victory allowed the Ravens to bounce back from a 5-2 loss to the Panthers in the front end of the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The pivotal blow of the first game came courtesy of Adelphi sophomore shortstop Tyler Becker, who knocked a three-run triple to right-center as part of a four-run seventh inning.

With the split, Franklin Pierce now stands at 11-7-1 (0-0 NE10), while Adelphi moves to 8-7-1 (1-1 NE10). Adelphi played as the home team in both games, as the contests were relocated to Pappas Field due to unplayable field conditions at Adelphi's Bonomo Field.

In the first game, Adelphi opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out and nobody on, junior right fielder Lucas Terwilliger turned on the first pitch he saw and drove a solo home run an estimated 355 feet to straightaway left. It was his first home run of the season.

Franklin Pierce answered immediately and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Senior right fielder Adam Chase (Bridgewater, Mass.) led off with a six-pitch walk and then motored all the way around to score from first when senior third baseman John Friday (Southborough, Mass.) drove a double into the gap in right-center. Friday moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Stephen Octave (New Windsor, N.Y.) and scored when graduate student first baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, N.Y.) dumped an RBI single into center field.

The game would remain 2-1 until Adelphi broke through for four against senior right-hander John Amendola (Wallingford, Conn.) in the last of the seventh. Junior Michael Cattani started things with a one-out single up the middle and moved to second on a two-out single through the left side of the infield by Terwilliger. The Panthers then did all their damage with two outs. First, junior center fielder Jonathan Iadevaia went the other way and looped a single into left-center field to score Cattani and tie the game at 2-2. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Becker came up for the game's pivotal at-bat. With the count full, on the seventh pitch of the at-bat, he hit a towering fly ball deep to right-center field. Chase and junior center fielder Brad Roberto (San Diego, Calif.) were both in pursuit, but neither could track the ball down, as it got into the gap for a three-run triple. Becker tried to turn the play into an inside-the-park home run, but was thrown out at the plate on a relay play.

Franklin Pierce got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but senior designated hitter Zack Tower (Auburn, Mass.) struck out to end the ball game.

Amendola (2-1) threw 101 pitches (70 strikes) over seven innings on the mound for Franklin Pierce. He allowed five runs on eight hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out five while taking the loss.

On the other side, junior right-hander Ed Baram (1-1) used 100 pitches (65 strikes) to get through eight innings on the hill to win for Adelphi. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out four. Senior left-hander David Butler worked around a hit and a hit batsman and struck out two to work a scoreless ninth and pick up his first save of the season.

Glew (2-1) then stole the show in the second game. He utilized 95 pitches (66 strikes) to fire seven scoreless innings before leaving with a big lead. He allowed just two hits, walked one, hit a batter and piled up 13 strikeouts on the way to the win.

The Ravens opened the scoring in the second game with three runs in the top half of the second. Chase started things with a one-out single the other way into right-center and moved around to third when sophomore second baseman J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass.) followed with a double into the gap in right-center. Sophomore designated hitter Jonathan Gonzalez (Worcester, Mass.) put the ball in play to pick up an RBI groundout and drive home Chase with the game's first run.

Sophomore center fielder Jack Duffy (Stratford, Conn.) was next and hit a low pop up in the general direction of second base. Adelphi senior second baseman Steven Withers either misread the ball, or misjudged the speed of Duffy, as he let the ball drop instead of making a play on it in the air. Duffy cleanly beat the ensuing throw to first to pick up an RBI single, and Wither threw the ball away as well, which allowed Duffy to move to second. He would score from there on an RBI single to center by Roberto.

Two more runs in the top of the fourth made it a 5-0 game. DiSarcina led off and pulled a line drive deep down the left-field line on the first pitch to open the inning with a double. Gonzalez singled through the left side, and the Ravens were going to hold DiSarcina at third with nobody out. However, Adelphi junior left fielder Brandon Morse overran the ball, which allowed DiSarcina to score and Gonzalez to motor all the way to third. Gonzalez would score as Duffy followed with a first-pitch RBI single through the left side.

The Ravens tacked on one in the sixth and two in the seventh to balloon the lead as high as 8-0. In the sixth, Gonzalez doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Roberto. In the seventh, Coggeshall drew a walk in front of Octave, who unloaded on a 1-2 pitch and clobbered a two-run home run an estimated 385 feet into the power alley in left-center. It was his fourth homer of the season.

Adelphi plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth against freshman right-hander Jack Wallace (Winthrop, Mass.) in his collegiate debut to create the 3-0 final. Iadevaia took a pinch-hit walk and Morse singled in front of junior third baseman Brett Malm, who socked the fifth pitch an estimated 350 feet to straightaway left for his second homer of the year.

Senior right-hander Michael Tarpey (1-1) started the second game on the mound for Adelphi and needed 83 pitches (57 strikes) just to get through 4.1 innings. He allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits, walked one and struck out three while taking the loss.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, March 25, when they travel to Pace for an NE10 doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at Finnerty Field in Pleasantville, N.Y.
