Walsh goes 4-for-4

Jabs Jabs had his second two-home run game in as many days on Wednesday night at Mount Olive.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (March 18, 2015) – Sophomore third baseman Jay Jabs (Schwenksville, Pa.) slugged a pair of home runs and sophomore right-hander Mike Lundin (Kingston, Mass.) struck out 10 in a complete-game effort on Wednesday night, as the No. 4/7 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University team rolled to a 10-1 road win over No. 14 Mount Olive in non-conference play at Scarborough Field. Senior left fielder Kilgore Gailmard scored the lone run in defeat for Mount Olive.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 17-1 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Mount Olive falls to 19-7 (9-2 Conference Carolinas). The game wrapped up a seven-game trip to North Carolina for the Ravens, who went 6-1 in the Tar Heel State.

Lundin went the distance on Wednesday night, throwing 125 pitches (82 strikes) in his first career nine-inning complete game. He scattered seven hits -- just one for extra bases -- and allowed just one run. Lundin did not issue a walk -- he has not given a free pass through 32 innings of work this season -- and struck out 10 on the way to the win (4-0). The run against came in the seventh inning, in Lundin's 30th inning on the season, and was the first he had surrendered in 2015.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. Senior catcher Matt Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.) started his 4-for-4 day with a double into the gap in left-center, moved to third on a passed ball and scored from there when junior first baseman Matt O'Herron (Springfield, Mass.) followed with an RBI double to left. O'Herron moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore second baseman Kyle Hood (Arlington, Mass.).

The Ravens picked up three more runs in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 5-0. Junior center fielder Maxx Sheehan (San Jose, Calif.) opened the inning with a single through the left side and scored when Jabs followed with his first long ball of the night, a two-run shot to right field, his fifth of the season. The home run meant the end of the day for the Mount Olive starter, senior right-hander Mark Harris, who was relieved by junior left-hander Carlos Rodriguez. Rodriguez was greeted by senior right fielder John Razzino (Cranston, R.I.), who made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to left, his second round tripper of the season.

Franklin Pierce was able to break the game open even more with three more runs in the top of the fifth to balloon the lead to 8-0. Jabs opened the frame with his second home run of the night, a solo blast to right field. It was his second multi-homer game in as many days, as he hit two against Dominican (N.Y.) on Tuesday. Later in the inning, Walsh knocked a one-out single to right and later came all the way around to score on an RBI triple to center field by sophomore designated hitter Chris LaVorgna (North Haven, Conn.). LaVorgna then scored as Hood followed with an RBI single to left.

Mount Olive put together its only run of the day to cut the gap to 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Gailmard started things with a lead-off single back through the middle, went first-to-third on a single to right field by senior right fielder Tyler Farmer and later scored on a wild pitch.

Franklin Pierce tacked on two final runs in the top of the ninth to create the 10-1 final. Razzino led off with a single to center, moved to second on a single to right by Walsh and went to third as O'Herron bounced into a fielder's choice, which forced Walsh out at second. Razzino scored on an RBI single into left-center by LaVorgna, who moved to second as Hood reached on a fielder's choice while O'Herron was erased at third. LaVorgna then came around to score on an RBI single to center by junior left fielder Kurtis White (Nahant, Mass.).

Harris started and threw 36 pitches (29 strikes) over two-plus innings on the mound for Mount Olive. He was roughed up for four runs on five hits, did not issue a walk, struck out three and took the loss (0-2).
