Chargers Dispatch Ravens In Three Saturday

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 6, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (11-25, 16-25, 8-25) by Northeast-10 Conference opponent the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon at the Charger Gymnasium. With the victory, the Chargers gallop forward to 17-3, 7-0 NE10 while the Ravens dropped their sixth league game this year.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Roach (Provo, Utah) led all Ravens in kills with six while chipping in five digs on the defensive end. Freshman middle blocker Breanna Mineweaser (Honey Brook, Pa.) added five kills, two blocks and hit a team-best .231 in the match. Libero Marisa Lamb (Phoenix, Ariz.) and defensive specialist Jocelyn Moody (Biddeford, Maine) tallied 10 digs apiece on defense.

Mallory Nowicki of New Haven began the match with back-to-back aces combined with a Raven attack error made the score 3-0 in the early going. Two straight dual blocks of Kali Greathead by Cierra Dolan (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Mineweaser put the Ravens within one point 3-2. A 9-1 Charger scoring binge capped off by a Ruby Fera kill set up by Kristine Rios upped their edge to 12-3. FPU brought their deficit down to seven, 16-9 following a Dolan kill before the hosts finished off the Ravens for the first set victory.

In the second set, UNH powered ahead 6-0 using three Fera kills to establish a six-point advantage. With Brittney Carias (Burlingame, Calif.) serving, the Ravens came within two markers at 8-6 after an ace was sandwiched between two UNH attack error. FPU kept the set close as Abigail Garnhart (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Dolan teamed up to stuff Camille Garden to keep the Charger lead at two, 14-12. Roach killed off a set from Mary Pease (East Haddam, Conn.) as the score stayed at 21-16 until New Haven ended the set with two aces.

Ruby Fera manufactured a game-high 11 kills and hit .308 in the showdown for New Haven. Teammate Camille Garden produced 10 kills, 10 total blocks, and a .500 hitting percentage.

The Ravens return home to the friendly confines of The Fieldhouse for a three-game homestand starting this Tuesday against Saint Michael's College at 7:00 p.m.
