Sonuga Headlines All-NE10 Team Selections, Leidhold and Varricchio Honored

RINDGE, N.H. (November 16, 2016) – Franklin Pierce University sophomore middle hitter Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.) has been selected to the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference Second Team it was announced Wednesday afternoon by the league offices.

Joining Sonuga with All-NE10 honors are sophomore outside hitter Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) and freshman Danielle Varricchio (Boynton Beach, Fla.) who earned Third Team and All-Rookie selections respectively.

Sonuga had an extremely successful sophomore campaign for the Ravens. A force in the middle, she ranked second in the league in hitting percentage (.311) and third in blocks per set (1.10). Her 100 total blocks led FPU and ranked third in the NE-10. Sonuga's .311 hitting percentage was the fourth best during a single season in program history. Currently, Sonuga is tied with Mandy Johnson (1999-2002) for the highest hitting percentage in team history (.309). The sophomore set a single game career-best with eight total blocks three times at Wilmington (Del.) on September 10th, versus NYIT at home a week later and at Saint Anselm on October 8th.

Leidhold, the NE-10 Rookie of the Year and First Team selection last season, improved her hitting percentage and block numbers from 2015. She led the Ravens in kills (341), total attacks (1,110) while ranking second in digs (361) and third in service aces (25). In the conference rankings, the sophomore was fourth in kills per set (3.67), fifth in total attacks (1,110) and sixth in kills (341). In program annals, Leidhold ranks 11th in digs (817) and 13th in total kills (685). She also has recorded the third best single season service ace mark (68) and the sixth highest season kill total (341). In 11 of her 26 matches the outside hitter tallied double-digit kills and digs. In a 3-2 setback at Le Moyne on October 22nd, Leidhold set a career-high with 35 digs while recording a season-best 23 kills in the loss.

A true freshman, Varricchio was a steady contributor on the right side all season for the Crimson and Grey. She ranked fourth on the team in digs (210) and fifth on the squad in kills (102) service aces (12) and total blocks (36). Varricchio recorded career-bests with six total blocks in a 3-2 setback to NYIT at home on September 16th, 10 kills in a 3-1 win in the Fieldhouse against Bentley on October 25th and ended the season with 24 digs during a 3-1 loss at the hands of New Haven in the NE-10 Quarterfinals.
