Middle Hitters Key as Ravens Defeat Adelphi 3-1 for First Win Since 2012

RINDGE, N.H. (November 11, 2016) – Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.) chalked up 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team won their fifth game in their last six contests with a 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 25-16) decision over Northeast-10 Conference opponent Adelphi on Friday night in the Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Crimson and Grey move to 11-14, 7-6 NE-10 and the setback drops the Panthers to 17-11, 8-5 NE-10. The victory over AU was the Ravens first since November 2, 2012, like tonight, FPU won that contest by a 3-1 score.

Currently, the Ravens sit in eighth place in the NE-10 standings and would punch their ticket to the NE-10 Tournament with a win tomorrow over Pace.

Teammate and fellow middle hitter Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) matched Sonuga's production as she recorded a high hitting percentage (.412) and block total (5) to go along with 10 kills. Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied 12 kills, a team-high 17 digs and Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) handed out 39 assists.

The Ravens didn't take control of the first set until the end as they used eight straight points, seven of them coming with Danielle Varricchio (Boynton Beach, Fla.) serving to go up 22-14. Five consecutive from the Panthers capped off by a Katie Barry kill put them within two, 22-20. Two kills by Sonuga over the last three serves of the set gave the Ravens a 25-20 victory.

Adelphi rolled out to a 5-1 lead on a dual block by Melissa Rigo and Katherine Ferris. The Panthers remained in front from that point as the closest the Ravens got were one point after a Runge kill in the early portion of the set.

In the crucial third set, the Crimson and Grey trailed 3-1 in the beginning, but embarked on a 10-1 scoring binge to take an 11-4 lead. Brittney Carias (Burlingame, Fla.) started off the run with service and Runge set up Sonuga three consecutive times resulting in points for the hosts. Leidhold got the last point for the Ravens during the run as an FPU attack error stopped the successful scoring streak. The Ravens didn't let up and put the set away with four straight points to end the set and take a commanding 2-1 lead in the match.

FPU rallied again in the fourth set as they trailed by a 9-7 score due to a service error. After the service error the Crimson and Grey scored seven in a row. Leidhold powered the ball into the floor off a Runge assist to make it 9-8. St. Jean and Varricchio teamed up for a block to knot the score at nine all and Leidhold gave the Ravens the lead for good with another kill set up by Runge.

Madison Klusendorf (Santa Maria, Calif.) added seven kills, 13 digs, three blocks an assist and a service ace in the win. Varricchio recorded three kills, 12 digs, three total blocks and an ace.

The Ravens wrap up the regular season tomorrow with a senior day contest versus Pace at 1:00 p.m.
