Balanced Team Effort Leads Ravens to Third Consecutive Victory

RINDGE, N.H. (November 1, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball team's win streak reached three games as the Crimson and Grey swept through Northeast-10 Conference opponent Saint Michael's College 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-16) Tuesday evening in the Fieldhouse. The victory moves the Ravens to 9-13, 5-5 NE-10 and the loss drops the Purple Knights to 3-12, 1-9 NE-10.

FPU had their best hitting contest of the season as they combined to hit .363 versus their conference rivals. Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.), Brittney Carias (Burlingame, Calif.), Madison Klusendorf (Santa Maria, Calif.) Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.), Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) and Jocelyn Moody (Biddeford, Maine) all recorded hitting percentages over .300.

Leidhold paced the Ravens offense with a game-high 15 kills to go along with seven digs, two blocks and a service ace. Sonuga hit .526 adding 10 kills, two blocks and a dig. Fellow middle hitter Hannah St. Jean tallied 10 kills and a match-best five total blocks.

The Ravens jumped out to a sizeable advantage in set one holding a match-high 12 point, 23-11 lead late thanks to a Hannah Runge kill. The Crimson and Grey then won the set on a kill by Leidhold to take the first set 25-13.

The second stanza was more of the same as the Rindge Ravens built up a huge lead before a late Purple Knight rally fueled by Sarah Rodgers serves brought the guests to a 23-19, four point deficit. The Ravens ended the attempted comeback bid with two straight points and a St. Jean kill to win the set 25-19.

Set three was close in the early going as teams traded points back and forth before a Gabby Ratte kill knotted up the score at nine all. Six straight points from the Ravens put them up 15-9, but the Purple Knights battled back to cut the Crimson and Grey lead to 18-14. With the hosts up 24-16, Runge set up Sonuga for the game clinching kill and the sophomore powered the ball into the court to clinch the match for the Ravens.

The Ravens wrap up their road schedule at Assumption on Saturday at noon.
