Volleyball shut out for first time this season, drop match 3-0 to NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (September 18, 2015) – Sophomore Karolina Moderova found a groove on Friday, as she put together 16 kills in favor of the NYIT Bears as they defeated the Franklin Pierce University Ravens by a score of 3-0. Leading the Ravens on offense were sophomores Madison Klusendorf (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.), as Klusendorf pummeled in nine kills, while St. Jean led the team in attack percentage with .273 with four kills.

With the loss, the Ravens drop to 5-4 on the season, but remain above .500.

The Ravens best opportunity of the night came right in the first set, when they controlled a lead a few points in at 8-7. From there, the Bears hit the ground taking the set 25-22. That finish would be the closest the Ravens would get at the end of a set, as Franklin Pierce would lose the second and third sets by the score of 25-19. The match would mark the first time the Ravens have been shut out in a match this season.

Freshman Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) followed suit behind Klusendorf with eight total kills, while reigning Northeast-10 Setter of the Week Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) passed out 27 assists on the match. Defensively, the Ravens were led by senior Sarah MacHugh (Red Hook, N.Y), while Leidhold followed in close suit with 14 kills. Freshman Brittney Carias (Burlingame, Calif.) was the final Raven in double-digit digs with 11.

For NYIT, Emily Mankowski and Tina Stefanovic each collected double-digit kills along with Moderova, as they went 11 and 10, respectively. The Bears' offense ran through Allison Fowler, who tossed out 31 assists, while Becky Syers was the only Bear in double-figure digs with 12.

The Ravens return to the court tomorrow, September 19, for a pair of games, first against LIU Post at 1 p.m. and against Holy Family at 3 p.m.
