Volleyball sputters, but downs Saint Anselm 3-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 10, 2014) – Senior Catie Swiderski (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and freshman Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) both recorded double-doubles on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens won for the seventh time in eight games over the Saint Anselm Hawks 3-1.

The Ravens would come out of the gate and take the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23. The Hawks would fight back to take the third set 25-20, and make things interesting. However, the Ravens were not phased, and took the victory in the fourth set 25-20 to take the win 3-1. Both teams had their lapses in their play, but the Ravens were able to prevail, now giving them a conference record of 3-2.

Swiderski made her combo with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Runge finished with 36 assists and 16 digs. Aiden Garcia (Eagle Pass, T.X.) led the team in kills with 14, all while finishing with a hit percentage of .500 on 24 attempts. Three other Ravens would finish in double-figure digs, with junior libero Sarah MacHugh (Red Hook, N.Y.) leading the way in that category with 23. The Ravens were once again a force at the net, as freshman Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) had a hand in four of the seven team blocks, while Garcia, Swiderski, and junior Kelsey Hausman (Sandy, Utah) all contributed being in on three of those seven as well.

For Saint Anselm, Melissa Ouellet led the way with 12 kills, followed by Kathryn Teets who was the only other Hawk in double-figure kills with 10. Natalie Steinwart tossed around 34 assists, and included three service aces in the offense. Melissa Jewett scooped up a team-high 26 digs, while two other Hawks finished with double-digit digs behind her. Melissa Donatio would contribute to four of the Hawks' seven blocks as well to lead them in that category.
