Volleyball’s win streak ends at six, loses 3-1 to Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 7, 2014) – Senior Catie Swiderski (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Aiden Garcia (Eagle Pass, T.X.) both smashed down 10 kills apiece, but it wasn't enough to hold down the Southern New Hampshire Penman on Tuesday night, dropping the match 3-1.

The Ravens got off to a slow start, dropping the first set of the match 25-18. The Ravens fought back in the second set, besting the Penman 25-20 to even up the match 1-1. Southern New Hampshire then took back control of the match, taking the third set by a score of 25-18 once again. Then the fireworks went off, as the Ravens and Penman fought tough in the fourth set. The largest lead for any team over the set was only four points, and it was at the start of the set when Southern New Hampshire had a 6-2 lead. It was tight throughout and went into extra rallies, even being tied up 26-26. But ultimately it would be two attack errors from Franklin Pierce that would give 28-26 set win, giving them the 3-1 win of the match.

Sophomore Kelsey Hausman (Sandy, Utah) and freshman Madison Klusendorf (Santa Maria, Calif.) were also strong on the offensive side of the ball, each recording seven kills. Hausman would also scoop up 10 digs, while junior Sarah MacHugh (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the team with 26 digs on the match. Recently-named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) dished out 36 assists in the losing effort. In a hot streak of her own, freshman Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) also had a hand in all five blocks the Ravens made on the night.

For Southern New Hampshire, Marisa Coronis led the way with a match-high 17 kills, while Nina McGouldrick chipped in 11 of her own. Catherine Cotton passed out an impressive 48 assists, while defensively, three different Penman finished with double-figure digs, led by Maeghan Higgings who had 26.

The Ravens take the court next on Friday, October 10 when they face off against Saint Anselm on the road at 7:30 p.m.
