Baah, Brena Post Event Wins, Women’s Track & Field Third at Middlebury Winter Classic

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (January 12, 2018) – Senior Lilian Baah (Danielson, Conn.) took first place in the triple jump, while freshman Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) finished first in the high jump on Saturday afternoon, to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team at the Middlebury Winter Classic. In all, the Ravens chalked up 15 top-five finishes on the way to a third-place finish in the five-team meet.

The Ravens earned 103.5 points on Saturday, to finish third, behind Plattsburgh State (160 points) and host Middlebury (123.5 points).

Baah turned in a hop, skip and jump total of 11.28 meters to win the triple jump, while Brena got up and over 1.64 meters to win the high jump. Junior Olivia Mabbett (Milford, N.H.) added a fourth-place finish behind Brena in the high jump, by clearing 1.49 meters.

The majority of Franklin Pierce's top-five finishes at Middlebury came in field events. The Ravens had three of the top-five finishers in the shot put, as senior Kendra Covington (Torrington, Conn.) took third (11.04m), freshman Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine) finished fourth (10.63m) and junior Jen Iozzi (Cranston, R.I.) placed fifth (10.58m). Covington also added a second-place finish in the weight throw (13.15m), and was followed in fourth place (12.11m) by junior Savannah Drowne (Athol, Mass.).

Elsewhere, freshman Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded a third-place finish in the pole vault, by getting over the bar at 2.60 meters.

Out on the track, it was three top-five finishes for the Ravens in the 500 meters, as well as two more in the mile. In the 500 meters, freshman Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.) took second (1:22.90), followed by junior Daijanique White (Hartford, Conn.) in third (1:27.11) and freshman Alena Masterson (Pelham, N.H.) in fifth (1:31.09). In the mile, sophomore Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.) finished third (5:43.90) and junior Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.) placed fifth (5:52.70).

The Ravens also collected a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. A lineup of senior CeCe Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.), White, Thompson and sophomore Evaline Rodrigues (Rehoboth, Mass.) put together a time of 4:27.12.

The Ravens are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 13, when select members of the team will travel to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth Relays.
