Women’s Track & Field in Action at CCSU Track & Field Invitational

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (April 28, 2018) – Ten top-three finishes led the way on Saturday for the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team at the CCSU Track & Field Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University. The event amounted to a tri-meet, as only the Ravens, host Blue Devils, and the University of Hartford were in attendance.

The Ravens collected 110 points on the day to finish third out of the three teams. CCSU won its home meet with 215 points, while the Hawks of Hartford finished second with 138 points.

The 10 top-three finishes came from nine different athletes, as junior Kendra Covington (Torrington, Conn.) was the only one to crack the top three in two different events. She turned in a heave of 11.53 meters to win the shot put, and followed with a throw of 43.85 meters to finish third in the hammer throw. The latter mark is currently good for 10th in the Northeast-10 Conference.

The Ravens picked up three other event wins on the day. Senior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) won the hammer throw in front of Covington, with a throw of 49.82 meters, and freshman Alyssa Harris (Billerica, Mass.) won the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.66. Meanwhile, as the only competitor in the 3000-meter steeplechase, senior Natalie Davies (Ware, Mass.) picked up the win with a time of 12:41.68.

The other premier mark of the day for Franklin Pierce came courtesy of senior Miranda Gagnon (Rollinsford, N.H.) in the javelin throw. She finished second, with a throw of 38.70 meters, a distance which currently ranks fourth in the NE10.

The Ravens also got second-place finishes from graduate student Nicole Galewski (Whitman, Mass.) in the 400 meters (1:05.75) and sophomore Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.) in the 1500 meters (5:03.17), as well as third-place finishes from sophomore Jen Iozzi (Cranston, R.I.) in the shot put (10.53m) and sophomore Olivia Mabbett (Milford, N.H.) in the high jump (1.50m).

The Ravens are back in action on Sunday, April 29, when they travel to Troy, N.Y., for the Capital District Classic, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
