Field Events Shine as Women’s Track & Field Places Third at Capital District Classic

TROY, N.Y. (April 29, 2017) – Senior Samantha Toscano (Northwood, N.H.) and freshman Katey Comstock (Windsor, Vt.) each established program records on Saturday, leading the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team to a third-place finish at the Capital District Classic, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Ravens tallied 119 points on the day, which was good for a third-place finish in the 10-team field. Franklin Pierce was bettered only by Oneonta (186 points) and host RPI (159 points).

Toscano and Comstock both had busy days and each set a new program record, but Franklin Pierce's lone win on Saturday came courtesy of sophomore Lilian Baah (Danielson, Conn.) in the triple jump. Baah put together a mark of 11.21 meters to win. The distance is currently good for sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference and seventh in the East Region on the year.

Comstock's school-record performance came in the shot put, where she came up with a heave of 12.35 meters to finish fourth and meet the NEICAAA Championships qualifying standard in the event. The mark currently sits seventh in the NE10 and 10th in the East Region. It was one of three top-five finishes on the day for Comstock, who also placed second in the javelin (36.46m) and fourth in the discus (35.70m). The javelin throw moved her into eighth in the NE10 on the year.

Meanwhile, Toscano's school-record outing came in the long jump, where she notched a mark of 5.54 meters to finish second and meet the NEICAAA qualifying mark. The distance is currently good for third in the NE10 and tied for fourth in the East Region. Toscano also finished third, behind Baah, in the triple jump, with a distance of 11.02 meters, which sits ninth in the NE10.

Other notable marks on Saturday for the Ravens included a fourth-place finish for junior Emily Quinn (West Bridgewater, Mass.) in the hammer (45.76m) and a seventh-place finish in the same event (43.06m) for senior Kendra Plant (Cumberland, R.I.).

The Ravens return to the track on May 5-6, when they travel to the Northeast-10 Championships, to be hosted by American International College in Springfield, Mass.
