Women’s Tennis Slips Past Bentley, 4-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. (September 29, 2018) – For the first time in more than a decade, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team posted a win over Bentley on Saturday, as the Ravens squeaked out a 4-3 win on the road. The Northeast-10 Conference match was contested on the campus of Babson College.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-5 (2-2 NE10), while Bentley falls to 1-5 (0-5 NE10).

The team match would ultimately turn on a tight match at third doubles. Franklin Pierce junior Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.) and senior Shelli Safran (Boxborough, Mass.) were able to grind out a 6-4 victory over Bentley junior Morgan Kreiss and freshman Cindy Luo. The win allowed Franklin Pierce to claim the doubles point, after the teams split first and second doubles. The doubles point would then stand as the difference, as the two sides went on to split the six singles matches as well.

Freshman Grayson LaCroix (Cherry Valley, Mass.) and junior Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) teamed up for a 6-2 win at second doubles, over sophomore Evann Welty and freshman Courtney Flynn. At first doubles, it was a 6-3 win for the Bentley duo of senior Hannah Fabianski and junior Katie Tynan, over juniors Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and Brigid Washburn (Greentown, Pa.).

The most competitive of the six singles contests was a Bentley victory at third singles, as Tynan pulled out a back-and-forth, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1 win over Rich. All the other singles contests went in straight sets as the Ravens pulled out the 4-3 victory in the team match.

Franklin Pierce got its singles points from Wyatt at first singles, Washburn at fourth singles and Safran at sixth singles. At first singles, Wyatt took care of Fabianski, 7-5, 6-2. At fourth singles, Washburn rolled through Kreiss, 6-0, 6-1. At sixth singles, Safran edged out Luo, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

In addition to Tynan's victory, Bentley collected points at second and fifth singles. At second singles, Welty dispatched LaCroix, 6-2, 6-1. At fifth singles, it was a 6-4, 6-4 win for Flynn over O'Donnell.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Saint Anselm for an NE10 match at 2 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
