Women’s Tennis Slips Past Saint Rose, 4-3

RINDGE, N.H. (October 5, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team pulled out a 4-3 win in Northeast-10 Conference play at home against Saint Rose on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-9 (1-6 NE10), while Saint Rose falls to 0-9 (0-8 NE10).

The match consisted of only seven points up for grabs, instead of the usual nine, as neither team could field a team at third doubles nor a competitor at sixth singles.

The teams split the pair of doubles matches, which were contested to open the afternoon. At first doubles, Saint Rose seniors Averie Bowen and KerriAnn Mahoney picked up an 8-2 win over Franklin Pierce senior Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) and sophomore Kelly Wilson (Hyde Park, N.Y.). Meanwhile, at second doubles, it was an 8-3 win for the Ravens, courtesy of sophomores Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) and Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.), who defeated Saint Rose sophomore Wendella Wilson and freshman Vivian Leung.

The two teams then split the top two singles matches as well, to level the score at 2-2. At first singles, Bowen defeated Rodrigues, 6-2, 6-2. At second singles, it was a 6-2, 6-0 win for Rich over Mahoney.

Saint Rose struck for a 3-2 lead on the strength of a 6-3, 6-2 win for Leung over junior Alexia Dasilva (Naugatuck, Conn.) at fifth singles, only to see the Ravens erase the deficit and take the win with straight-set victories at both third and fourth singles. At third singles, O'Donnell triumphed over Wendella Wilson, 6-2, 6-2. At fourth singles, Kelly Wilson chalked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over sophomore Lindsey Skouras.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Adelphi for an NE10 match at 11 a.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
