Women’s Tennis Edged by Plymouth State, 5-4

RINDGE, N.H. (September 14, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was narrowly defeated, 5-4, in non-conference play at home against Plymouth State on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-4, while Plymouth State improves to 3-2.

Franklin Pierce opened the day with wins in two of the three doubles matches. At first doubles, sophomore Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) chalked up an 8-5 win over Plymouth State freshman Sage Winter and junior Irene Kigugu. Meanwhile, at second doubles, sophomores Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) and Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.) cruised to an 8-4 win over freshman Maggie McCarthy and junior Megan Wheeler.

The Ravens also collected wins in two of the top three singles matches on Thursday. At first singles, Wyatt dropped the first set to Winter, but was dominant for the remainder of the match to rally for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. At third singles, Rich dispatched Kigugu, 6-3, 6-1.

For Franklin Pierce, it all added up to a 4-3 lead after the top four singles matches had been completed. Unfortunately for the crimson and grey, Plymouth State would score straight-set wins at fifth and sixth singles to pull out the win. The best chance the Ravens had to clinch the match had ultimately come at fourth singles, where O'Donnell took the first set from freshman Kerstin Venincasa, 6-2, before the latter bounced back for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference match at noon in Colchester, Vt.
