Women’s Tennis Cruises to 7-2 Win at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 8, 2016) – Junior Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) picked up wins at both first doubles and second singles on Saturday afternoon to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team in a 7-2 victory on the road at Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-10 (3-9 Northeast-10), while Saint Rose falls to 0-11 (0-11 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce opened with a 2-0 lead on Saturday, as Saint Rose only fielded five players, which meant the Golden Knights had to default at sixth singles and third doubles. The two teams would then split the remaining two doubles matches. At first doubles, Rodrigues and freshman Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) rolled to an 8-2 win over Saint Rose freshman Emily Farrell and junior KeriAnn Mahoney. Saint Rose answered at second doubles, as juniors Averie Bowen and Alanna Bergmann posted an 8-5 victory over freshmen Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) and Kelly O'Donnell (Maywood, N.J.).

Franklin Pierce would then pick up wins in four of the five remaining singles contests to open up a lead and ultimately steamroll to the 7-2 victory. At second singles, Rodrigues completed her two-win afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Farrell. At third singles, it was a 6-2, 6-1 win for senior Kara Brazel (Glastonbury, Conn.) against Mahoney. Rich rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bergmann at fourth singles. O'Donnell dispatched freshman Wendella Wilson at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1. The lone win for Saint Rose in singles play came at first singles, where Bowen knocked off Wyatt, 6-3, 6-0.

The Ravens -- who have closed out their Northeast-10 campaign -- return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Plymouth State for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. in Plymouth, N.H.
