RINDGE, N.H. (September 17, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis eked out a 5-4 win over New Haven at home on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-5 (2-4 Northeast-10), while New Haven falls to 1-3 (1-3 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce took two of three doubles points to open the day. At first doubles, freshman Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) posted an 8-2 win over New Haven senior Sarah Burzin and freshman Shelby Clyne. Meanwhile, at second doubles, it was an 8-3 win for senior Kara Brazel (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Maria Quagliano (Branford, Conn.) over sophomore twin sisters Caitlyn and Lauryn Burridge.

In singles play, just one of the six matches went to three sets. As the rest of the match unfolded, it ultimately meant the three-set match would stand as the decisive contest of the day. At third singles, Brazel swept the first set from Burzin, 6-0, before Burzin battled back with a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set would nearly go the distance, with Brazel ultimately pulling out a 7-5 victory to take the match, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.

Elsewhere in singles play, the Ravens picked up wins at first singles and fourth singles. At first singles, Wyatt took care of Caitlyn Burridge, 6-4, 6-1. At fourth singles, it was a 6-3, 6-0 win for freshman Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine) over Lauryn Burridge.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Sept. 18, when they remain home to host Adelphi in a Northeast-10 match at 1 p.m.
