Safran, Austin win at third doubles

RINDGE, N.H. (October 5, 2015) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated on Monday afternoon, 8-1, at home against Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-9 (1-8 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 8-2 (6-1 Northeast-10).

The only point of the day for Franklin Pierce came at third doubles, from freshman Shelli Safran (Boxborough, Mass.) and senior Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.). The duo edged out an 8-5 victory over Assumption junior Santina Marinelli and sophomore Shannon Tarpey.

Meanwhile, Assumption had a pair of players win in both singles and doubles on Monday, including senior Marie Black, who posted victories at first doubles and second singles, losing just one game along the way. In doubles play, she teamed with junior Hannah Riley for an 8-0, shutout win. Later, at second singles, Black steamrolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Ravens return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 8, when they remain home to host Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 2 p.m. in Rindge.
