Gilooly wins in both singles and doubles play

Rodgers ALBANY, N.Y. (September 20, 2014) – Senior Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) rolled to a win at third singles on Saturday, while junior Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.) won at both fourth singles and third doubles, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was clipped on the road, 5-4, by Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3 (0-3 Northeast-10), while Saint Rose improves to 2-5 (1-4 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce started the day with wins in two of the three doubles matches to open with a 2-1 lead. At second doubles, freshman Sonia Rodrigues (Swansea, Mass.) teamed with senior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) for an 8-4 win over Saint Rose senior Megan Stacklum and freshman KeriAnn Mahoney. For Parrett, the win pushed her record on the week to 3-0, as she was also victorious in both singles and doubles play on Tuesday at Saint Anselm.

At third doubles, Gilooly and freshman Maria Quagliano (Branford, Conn.) doubled up junior Maria Malafronte and freshman Alanna Bergmann, 8-4. At first doubles, Saint Rose got on the board, courtesy of juniors Isabela Cubillos and Paige Southwick, who rolled to an 8-2 win.

Saint Rose was able to erase the 2-1 deficit and pick up the 5-4 win by winning four of Saturday's six singles matches. In the end, the team match would turn on the second singles match between Rodrigues and Southwick. Southwick swept through the first set, 6-0, but Rodrigues battled back for the Ravens with a 6-4 win in the second set. The third-set tiebreak was ultimately decided by just two points, with Southwick emerging with the 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 win.

Franklin Pierce earned singles points at third and fourth singles, thanks to Rodgers and Gilooly, respectively. At third singles, Rodgers breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stacklum. At fourth singles, Gilooly edged Mahoney, 7-5, 6-4.

In addition to Southwick's two victories, Cubillos won at both first doubles and first singles for Saint Rose, as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Le Moyne for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 10 a.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
