RINDGE, N.H. (September 14, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated, 9-0, by New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce on Sunday.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens its season at 0-1 (0-1 Northeast-10), while New Haven opens at 1-0 (1-0 Northeast-10).

New Haven took all three doubles points on the way to the sweep, though the Ravens put up a fight at first and third doubles. At first doubles, senior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) and junior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) battled before falling, 8-4, to New Haven sophomore Eva Rybka and junior Lindsey Conley. At third doubles, junior Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman Lyla Austin (Rindge, N.H.) posted an identical score against juniors Christina Santos and Jess MacPhee.

Franklin Pierce faced similar frustrations in singles play, while dropping all six matches as New Haven finished off the sweep. Perhaps the best showing came at fifth singles from sophomore Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.), who fell to New Haven junior Martha Pezoldt, 6-3, 6-3.

In all, four different New Haven players picked up wins in both singles and doubles play on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers were led by sophomores Samantha Nigri and Alexandra Sharshakov, as neither dropped a game in either singles or doubles action.

The Ravens return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they remain home to host Stonehill at 4 p.m.
