Melbourne, Rodgers team for win at second doubles

Rodgers Rodgers picked up wins at third singles and second doubles on Sunday at Nichols.

POMFRET, Conn. (April 13, 2014) – Juniors Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) and Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.) picked up singles wins on Sunday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated, 6-3, in non-conference play at Nichols.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-11 (1-10 Northeast-10), while Nichols improves to 12-4 (7-1 Commonwealth Coast).

Rodgers teamed with sophomore Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) at second doubles to pick up Franklin Pierce's only doubles point of the afternoon, as the duo rolled past Nichols sophomore Michelle Keklik and senior Erin Rivers. Unfortunately for the Ravens, Melbourne injured herself during doubles play, which left her unable to take the court in singles play. As a result, Franklin Pierce, which already trailed 2-1 after doubles, had to slide everybody else in its lineup up a spot and forfeit a point at sixth singles.

Elsewhere in doubles play, senior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) and junior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) had their hands full at first doubles, where they dropped an 8-0 decision to senior Anna Dyakiv and freshman Cristina Szepanski. In singles play, McCarthy squared off with Dyakiv at first singles and Parrett locked horns with Szepanski at second singles. The Ravens' top duo fared better in singles play against Nichols' best, but were both ultimately defeated, as McCarthy fell, 6-4, 6-3, and Parrett dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision.

Rodgers' and Boulanger's victories came at third and fourth singles, respectively. At third singles, Rodgers went past freshman Emma Carey, 6-4, 6-2. At fifth singles, Boulanger downed junior Kasie Chapin, 6-2, 6-3. Between the two, at fourth singles, sophomore Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.) took the first set from Keklik and nearly collected another point for the Ravens, but ultimately fell, 6-7, 6-3, 10-6.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, April 19, when they return home for their season finale against Adelphi at 10 a.m.
