Women’s Soccer Slips Past Pace on Senior Night, 2-1

Senior Day ceremony

RINDGE, N.H. (October 13, 2018) – Senior forward Bruna Tavares (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) provided a goal and an assist on Saturday night, as the No. 15 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over visiting Pace on Senior Night at Sodexo Field. Junior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) potted the game-winning goal in the second half of the Northeast-10 Conference affair.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-1-1 (9-1-1 NE10), while Pace falls to 5-8-1 (3-7-0 NE10).

Franklin Pierce controlled play statistically throughout the night, as the Ravens chalked up advantages of 14-5 in shot attempts, 9-3 in shots on goal and 6-0 in corner kicks.

After the team honored its three seniors prior to the game, one of those seniors, Tavares, opened the scoring for Franklin Pierce in the 26th minute. Junior midfielder Gabi Pereira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) would pick up the assist on the play, as she served the ball from the left side of the field into the right-wing side of the box. Tavares settled the ball and had the quick finish from about 10 yards out for her third goal of the season.

Pace came out energetic to start the second half and found the equalizer just 6:49 into the second stanza, in the 52nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Gabby Lucas found a shooting lane from about 25 yards out in front of the goal and uncorked a shot which seemed to surprise almost everybody. Freshman goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) dove to her right and got a piece of the shot, but it was not enough to keep the ball from slipping into the left side of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Lucas.

Franklin Pierce found the game-winning goal just outside the final 15 minutes, with 15:10 remaining in regulation, in the 75th minute. Tavares flashed her play-making skills this time, as she played the ball into the penalty area from outside the top of the box. Marques was on the other end of the pass and finished into the left side of the net from outside the top of the six-yard box, for her 10th goal of the season, which tied her for the team lead.

Kane (7-1-1) finished with two saves against three shots on goal to pick up the win in front of the Franklin Pierce net.

At the other end of the field, freshman Jade Mallea started, made three saves against four shots in the first half and did not factor in the decision. Senior Morgan Jones (2-6-0) took over after halftime and suffered the loss after making four saves against five shots.

After a midweek bye, the Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they remain home to host Adelphi in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
