Women’s Soccer Uses Late Goal to Stun No. 6 Adelphi, 1-0

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 21, 2017) – Making her first start as a Raven, sophomore midfielder Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put home the only goal the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team would need on Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field. She struck in the 78th minute, as the Ravens dealt the first Northeast-10 Conference loss of the season to first-place, and No. 6 nationally ranked, Adelphi, 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) made five saves in net to post the shutout.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-3-2 (7-3-2 NE10), while Adelphi falls to 13-2-0 (11-1-0 NE10). Adelphi -- which had also lost a non-conference game to Wilmington (Del.) on Thursday -- suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since Oct. 4 and Oct. 7, 2014. The Ravens also dealt the Panthers one of the two losses the last time around.

The game went well past an hour without anyone able to find the net, as the two sides matched each other step-for-step statistically. Over the course of the game, Adelphi put together an advantage of 9-7 in shot attempts, and also held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal in the closely-contested match.

The Ravens struck for the only goal of the afternoon in the 78th minute, with just 12:07 to play in regulation. Marques wound up in a one-on-one situation against the goalkeeper and put her shot into the lower-left corner for her first goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce spent much of the final 10 minutes in its own end of the field, as Adelphi, expectedly, ramped up the pressure in search of the equalizer. The Ravens were able to stave off a pair of free-kick opportunities from just outside the penalty area, and ultimately held on to close out the 1-0 victory.

Cook (8-3-2) notched her seventh shutout of the season, and the 21st of her career, with the five-save clean sheet. At the other end of the field, freshman goalkeeper Isabel Sandstrom (13-2-0) finished with two saves against three shots on goal and suffered the loss.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 25, when they return home to host Saint Michael's in an NE10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
