Late Goal Forces Women’s Soccer to Settle for 1-1 Tie (2 OT) at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 30, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team led through 80 minutes on the road at Assumption on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately had to settle for one point and a 1-1 tie after two overtimes. Assumption sophomore midfielder Victoria Stowell provided the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute to force the draw in Northeast-10 Conference play at Multi-Sport Stadium.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce now stands at 4-2-2 (3-2-2 NE10) on the season, while Assumption moves to 5-1-1 (3-1-1 NE10).

Franklin Pierce had the first half's only goal on Saturday afternoon, as junior midfielder Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put home her team-leading third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Bruna Tavares (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) provided the setup on the play, as she chalked up her team-best fourth assist of the year by pushing a through-ball into the penalty area. On the other end, da Silva was able to collect the pass and then slip her shot inside the far post to open the scoring.

The game would go without another goal until Assumption evened things with just 7:46 to play. It would be the first collegiate goal for Stowell, who struck off of a corner kick in the 83rd minute. Senior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) was able to get a hand to Stowell's shot, but could not keep the ball out of the net.

The remainder of regulation and all 20 minutes of overtime went by the boards without further scoring, as the two sides played to the 1-1 tie.

Cook (4-2-2) finished with five saves against six shots on goal in front of the Franklin Pierce goal. At the other end of the field, sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Nason (5-1-1) stopped two of three shots on her goal.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when they return home to host Bentley in an NE10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
