Pereira Second-Half Tally Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Le Moyne, 1-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 13, 2017) – In the 72nd minute on Wednesday afternoon, sophomore midfielder Gabi Pereira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) snapped a long scoreless streak and lifted the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Field. Senior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) notched her second straight shutout in the victory.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-0-1 (1-0-1 NE10), while Le Moyne falls to 1-3-0 (0-2-0 NE10).

The game's lone goal came deep into the second half, as Pereira struck with just 18:36 to play in regulation, snapping a scoreless drought which dated back through Saturday's scoreless tie at New Haven. She took a feed from junior midfielder Bruna Tavares (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and put a shot from the top of the penalty area into the left side of the net. It was Pereira's team-leading third goal of the season.

As one might expect from a 1-0 game, the statistics suggested a fairly even contest. Le Moyne held slim advantages of 12-11 in shot attempts and 4-3 in corner kicks. The Dolphins were more effective in putting their shots on target, with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal, but the Ravens were the only team to find the back of the net.

Cook (2-0-1) stopped all six of those shots on goal to pick up her second shutout of the season, as well as the 16th of her career. Le Moyne junior netminder Anastasija Cumika (1-3-0) made just one save against two shots on goal in the loss.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they return home to host American International in an NE10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
