Women’s Soccer Plays to 0-0 Tie (2 OT) at New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (September 9, 2017) – It was nothing doing on either side on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw in its Northeast-10 Conference opener. Neither the Ravens nor the Chargers of the University of New Haven could find the net over the course of 110 minutes at Kayo Field.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 1-0-1 (0-0-1 NE10), while New Haven now stands at 3-0-1 (0-0-1 NE10).

Perhaps the best scoring chance of the night for the Ravens came early in the first overtime, in the 93rd minute. Sophomore forward Sophie Cousineau (Milton, Mass.) was set up for a shot from just inside the penalty area on the right side. Her low shot cleanly beat New Haven junior goalkeeper Kyra Wolonsavich, but narrowly missed wide, outside the left post. Late in the second overtime, in the 110th and final minute, junior back Marta Turmo (Barcelona, Spain) attempted to tuck a free kick into the upper reaches of the net, but Wolonsavich was equal to the task and turned the shot aside.

New Haven had an edge statistically on the night, though it was not a wide one, and neither team wound up with anything to show for it either way. The Chargers finished with advantages of 14-11 in shot attempts, 5-3 in shots on goal and 7-3 in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) turned aside all five shots on her net to post her first shutout of the season, as well as the 15th of her career, to pick up the tie (1-0-1) in goal for Franklin Pierce. Wolonsavich (3-0-1) made three saves against three shots on goal to notch her third shutout of the campaign.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Le Moyne for an NE10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Ted Grant Field in Syracuse, N.Y.
