Holtschlag First-Half Goal Puts Women’s Soccer Past Le Moyne, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. (October 26, 2016) – For the second straight outing, the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team used a first-half goal to post a 1-0 victory and keep its postseason hopes alive. On Wednesday afternoon, senior back Anna Holtschlag (Rhede, Germany) put home her first goal of the season in the 14th minute, as the Ravens picked up a win over Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-6-2 (4-6-2 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne falls to 8-7-1 (6-6-1 Northeast-10). Franklin Pierce will still need a win in its regular-season finale on Saturday at Saint Michael's to continue its push for a postseason spot, pending the outcome of other games around the league.

The only goal of the game came just 13:50 into the proceedings on Wednesday afternoon, off a corner kick from the left-wing side. Sophomore forward Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took the kick and curled it to the top of the six-yard box in front of the net. Holtschlag was there and was able to get her head to the ball, putting it to the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The goal would hold up for the remainder of the day, as the Ravens came away with the 1-0 win.

The dearth of scoring was not due to lack off attempts, as both sides took an offense-by-volume approach throughout the afternoon. Franklin Pierce would finish the game with advantages of 23-13 in shot attempts, 11-5 in shots on goal and 7-4 in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) stopped all five shots on her goal to pick up the win (7-6-2) and post her fifth shutout of the season, the 14th of her career. Le Moyne sophomore Anastasija Cumika (8-7-1) finished with 10 saves against 11 shots on goal and took the loss in net.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they wrap up the regular season with a trip to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for noon at Duffy Field in Colchester, Vt.
