Women’s Soccer Drops Goal Bonanza to Saint Rose, 4-2

RINDGE, N.H. (October 4, 2016) – Goals came early, often and throughout the night on Tuesday at Sodexo Field, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team squared off with Saint Rose. Sophomore midfielder Bianca Martins da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored her first two collegiate goals for the Ravens, but it was not enough, as Saint Rose got goals from four different players to post a 4-2 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-3-2 (2-3-2 Northeast-10), while Saint Rose improves to 6-4-0 (3-4-0 Northeast-10).

Saint Rose struck twice early to build a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish. First, in the 15th minute, freshman midfielder Nina Predanic wound up with the ball at the top of the 18-yard box on the left-wing side. She elected to take a shot from there and was able to curl it into the top-left corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Next, in the 21st minute, freshman midfielder Victoria Barris slipped a through pass from the midfield past the Franklin Pierce back line and into the strike of fellow freshman midfielder Deanna Trongone. Trongone quickly put the finish low and inside the right post from 15 yards out for her first career goal.

Franklin Pierce was able to stem the tide for the remainder of the half with a goal in the 29th minute. The ball wound up with da Silva outside the penalty area on the left side, and she put her shot on the goal from 20 yards out. Saint Rose sophomore goalkeeper Madison Taylor got her hands to the shot, but the ball deflected off her gloves and wound up in the net for da Silva's first collegiate score.

Saint Rose reclaimed the two-goal lead on the other side of halftime, in the 58th minute. Predanic had the original shot on the play, as she stepped into the ball from 20 yards out on the right-wing side and drove the ball hard towards the top-left corner. Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) left her feet and was able to get both hands to the ball while diving to her left. However, the ball would still get behind her and fall in front of the left post. Saint Rose senior forward Sammy Blizzard was the first player on the scene and had an easy finish for her first goal of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce again pulled within a goal in the 67th minute, on da Silva's second score of the night. The original shot on the play came courtesy of senior midfielder Nicole Chaet (Tewksbury, Mass.), who put the ball into the defense from 15 yards in front of the left post. As the blocked shot rebounded outside the penalty area, senior back Anna Holtschlag (Rhede, Germany) got a touch on the ball and laid it off for da Silva, who promptly put a shot inside the right post to make it a 3-2 game.

Saint Rose would again reclaim the two-goal lead and quash the comeback attempt in the 72nd minute. In the aftermath of a corner kick, the ball wound up pinballing around inside the six-yard box. Ultimately, senior back Elisa Galbiati was able to find the ball amid the chaos and easily finish her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Cook (4-3-2) finished with three saves against seven shots on goal in net for Franklin Pierce. Taylor (2-2-0) stopped two of the four shot on her goal at the other end of the field for Saint Rose.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Bentley for a Northeast-10 contest. Kickoff is set for noon in Waltham, Mass.
