Women’s Soccer Finishes Two-Win Opening Weekend with 3-0 Shutout of Caldwell

RINDGE, N.H. (September 4, 2016) – An early penalty kick and a pair of second-half insurance markers made up the scoring on Sunday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team completed an unblemished opening weekend with a 3-0 win over Caldwell on the second day of the Franklin Pierce Classic. Graduate student midfielder Fernanda Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil), senior midfielder Madison Finlay (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior midfielder Nicole Chaet (Tewksbury, Mass.) all scored in the non-conference contest at Sodexo Field.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-0-0, while Caldwell falls to 0-2-0. Franklin Pierce controlled the run of play all afternoon, racking up advantages of 18-1 in shot attempts, 9-1 in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks.

The Ravens got the only goal they would need on the day in the 19th minute, after a foul committed in the far left-wing reaches of the penalty area resulted in a penalty kick. Marques took the kick and slotted it into the lower-left corner of the net, past the outstretched arms of the diving goalkeeper, for her first goal since Sept. 17, 2014.

The two insurance markers came in quick succession, deep into the second half. In the 74th minute, junior forward Aimee Malboeuf (Cumberland, R.I.) sent a ball to Finlay, who was able to loft a shot over Caldwell sophomore goalkeeper Mary Kanzler and into the net for her third goal of the weekend. Just 2:19 later, in the 76th minute, Chaet took a feed from sophomore forward Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and rifled a shot from 20 yards out on the right side, which beat the keeper, rang off the right post and deflected into the net for Chaet's first goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) stopped the only shot on her goal on the afternoon to pick up the win (1-0-0) and post her first shutout of the season. Kanzler (0-1-0) made six saves against nine shots on goal at the other end of the field for Caldwell.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, September 10, when they remain home to host Pace in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
